Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using these treatments must be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
