A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
